Advantages

Natural Look and Feel

Since human hair wigs are made from 100% of the healthiest human hair, these wigs will create the most natural look. The multidimensional hues and tones found in human hair offer colors that are difficult for synthetic wigs to mimic. Whether indoors, or outdoors, human hair wigs maintain a natural look in any light. Human hair wigs tend to be softer and less shiny than synthetic wigs. While wigs that are synthetic may be more affordable, the fiber may look more artificial. This is because synthetic strands are thicker, stiffer, and have more sheen than human hair.

Styling Versatility

Human hair wigs are great for those people who love to change their style; with human hair wigs, you're not limited to one style. Styling tools such as curling irons, blow dryers, hot rollers, flat irons, etc., can all be used on low heat settings on human hair wigs. Heated styling, however can damage 100% human hair wigs just like with natural hair, so some caution should be taken with heated styling. Synthetic wigs have one style and cannot be treated with any heat styling tools because they can ruin the fiber and create frizz. Just like natural hair, human hair wigs will return to their original style after washing.  Also, with human hair wigs you have the ability to change your hair color if you choose. Best results are achieved by having a professional color your wig. Although it is not recommended that you chemically process or dye your human hair wig multiple times, human hair wigs are capable of being dyed or chemically treated, unlike synthetic wigs. Human hair wigs can frizz in humid weather, just like natural hair; and they can also get a bed head look if slept in, just like natural hair.

Longevity

If a human hair wig is cared for properly, it will last much longer than a synthetic wig. Human hair is stronger than synthetic fiber, and therefore creates a more durable wig. Unlike synthetic wigs, which cannot be near heat, one could wear a human hair wig and cook a full Thanksgiving dinner, for example, with no worries of damaging their wig—one could even relax by a fireplace without worry. Proper care for your wig will keep it nicer, longer. You should not wash your human hair wig everyday like your own hair, as this could dry out the hair, make it lose its vitality, or create bald patches. Rule of thumb is to wash your human hair wig every 6-10 wearings. Before washing, make sure to comb out any tangles, always starting at the bottom and working your way to the top. A wide toothed comb or pick is the best choice. Wash your human hair wig in cool water with a shampoo made specifically for chemically treated hair, as this will help keep the hair looking healthy. Gently massage shampoo through hair, without rubbing—rubbing the hair can create more tangles and knots. Rinse the wig with cool water and gently blot dry with a towel, then place on a stand to dry. A human hair wig should NEVER be brushed or combed while wet—the elasticity of the hair is very vulnerable and can be significantly damaged by doing so.

Disadvantages

More Expensive

Cost is the main disadvantage of human hair wigs. The creation of human hair wigs depends on the availability of natural hair rather than technology, meaning human hair wigs cannot be created as easily as synthetic. Human hair wigs must also be constructed carefully, ensuring that the real hair cuticle is kept in the same direction while weaving. As a result, human hair wigs are more expensive than synthetic wigs.

Styling Factors

Human hair wigs have to be styled daily, whereas synthetic wigs offer a more “shake and wear” convenience.

Are there different types of human hair wigs?

There are two types of human wigs-processed and unprocessed. Processed wigs are typically less expensive and are made out of black hair, typical of Chinese, Indians, and Indonesians. These human hair wigs can also be styled, bleached, or colored during the wig manufacturing process. Unprocessed wigs are usually more expensive and are of a finer quality, as they require no chemical processing. An example of this is Remy hair, and it is the healthiest hair available. Although Remy hair is slightly colored or processed, it is very close to its natural state.  Both types of human hair wigs can be washed, styled, and dried like normal hair.

Is a human hair wig the right choice for me?

Although synthetic wigs have grown in popularity, and are generally less expensive, they may not necessarily be the best choice for you. As previously discussed, there are several benefits to human hair wigs, mainly longevity, durability, styling versatility, and a natural look and feel. The primary drawback to selecting a human hair wig is the cost, so if you plan to invest in a long-term wig option, a human hair wig might just be right for you!
